Many of you know that it is safer for older children to ride in booster seats. Did you know that car crash is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-12? A 4-5 year old who uses a booster seat has a 67% reduction in fatality risks vs. children of the same age riding in a car without a restraining system.
But do you know what laws apply to you? Child restraint laws vary based on the state you live in, and they can be really confusing. How so? Well, some states require any child under the age of 8 to be restrained in a booster while other states only require children up to age 4 to ride in one.
Did you know that although the AAP recommends that children ride in booster until the age of 12 or 57’, but only 13% of children 54-56” do? This one tickles me a bit because both my mother in law and my grandmother in law would need a booster seat to drive their cars based on height.
That being said, I do have my children in booster seats because one kept my oldest son from serious injuries during a serious car wreck I had 12 years ago. Many of you know that I totaled my car, and my then 2.5 year old had a bruise of the full 5 point harness from his booster seat on his chest the next day. While that was the only injury he sustained, it really opened my eyes to the importance of a restraining seat!
